Autumn is a period when most of us will start noticing our skin changing and reacting in some way to the changing weather conditions. This shows us that it’s time to make some changes.

Our skincare routine cannot stay the same throughout the whole year, simply because different weather conditions require different products. For example, if you apply a heavy and rich cream on your face in summer, you will find a second meaning to the expression “hot mess”! And the same is true the other way around – a light lotion that’s enough to moisturize your body in the summer will do nothing for you in winter.

Below, I will give you 5 amazing skin care tips for autumn, so that you keep your skin looking healthy and pretty throughout the following season.

1. Moisturize regularly

Daily moisturizing is crucial, especially in autumn and winter months when the humidity is low and our skin is drier in general.

For your body, choose a moisturizer in the form of cream, not a lotion, because creams are usually thicker and richer, so they provide more hydration to your skin. 

For your face, try using facial oils instead of some light moisturizer. Facial oils are great for hydration and locking the moisture in your skin.

Do not miss any body part, especially the ones that are exposed to the cold weather and are not covered, such as your hands, feet, face, etc.

2. Don’t skip the sunscreen

Sunscreen is not just for the beach! It should be a part of our daily skincare routine in the same way that brushing teeth is!

Many people do the mistake of stopping the use of sunscreen once the summer is over. This is a big mistake. Even when the Sun is not visible, UV rays are still affecting our skin. This happens even in winter.

So, we said before that you should make a couple of changes in your skincare routine as autumn approaches, but sunscreen isn’t one of them. Sunscreen should be used throughout the whole year.

The dangers of UV rays are multiple, including premature skin aging, the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, as well as more serious conditions such as skin melanoma. The use of sunscreen is especially important in people with light skin and bright eye color since they are more susceptible to sun damage.

3. Pay attention to all body parts

It’s not just your face that needs some extra attention in autumn, but also your whole body.
Sometimes, we make the mistake of forgetting certain body parts which are exposed to the cold weather. Such examples are the hands and lips. And it is not uncommon that we see people with completely dry and cracked hands in autumn.

When the transition from summer to autumn begins, start carrying a hand cream with you at all times, so that you are able to apply some when you feel that your hands are getting dry again.

Another problematic area is the lips. They are also sensitive and react badly to cold weather. To keep your lips soft and healthy in autumn, always carry a moisturizing lip balm with you.

4. Exfoliate with an oil scrub

Even though the autumn weather might dry out the skin, it does not mean that you should skip exfoliation altogether. Instead of a harsh gel exfoliator, try using an oil-based scrub which will remove dead skin cells while at the same time hydrate the skin.

You don’t have to be afraid of exfoliation in autumn, you just have to find the right type of exfoliator. Exfoliate your whole body, pat-dry your skin, and then immediately apply moisturizer all over.

However, even though exfoliation should be done in autumn, don’t overdo it. Once or twice a week is more than enough. And finally, ditch the fruity and citrus shower gels, and start using richer, creamier shower lotions.

Fresh and cooling gels and products are for summer, while thicker, richer, and heavier skin products are meant for autumn and winter.

5. Hydrate your skin both outside and inside

Cranking up the heaters indoors is severely drying for your skin. To counteract this drying effect, try using a humidifier. No matter what kind of heating you have, a humidifier is a must when the cold days approach.

Skin health and beauty are not just an external problem. These problems can also be helped and supported from the inside; the food you eat, the supplements you take, and the amount of water you drink, etc. Make your plate colorful and fill it with fruits and vegetables. This will not only improve the quality of your skin but also protect you during the flu season. And don’t forget, water is a must. The more the better. Like this, you flush out all the toxins from your body and you leave your skin soft, supple, and hydrated.

Remember that each new season requires a new skincare routine. Adjusting this routine based on the outside weather and your skin type is the best way to keep your skin healthy and pretty throughout the whole year.

To sum up, what you need to focus in autumn in regards to your skin is regular moisturizing, a well-balanced diet, and good hydration. Do all of these things and you will notice by yourself that in just a few short days your dry skin problems will become history.
